Who is Nicolae Diaconu Sofronesti

When in 1991, “ASTRA” Museum from Sibiu started an important operation to register on a national plane, all of the folk artists (“craftsmen”) – peasants - specialized on contemporary folk art creations, it was then that DIACONU NICOLAE was found, a native from Tibanesti-county Iasi (he lives now in Codlea - county Brasov)
He was born in a poor peasant family, having 5 brothers, very intelligent, demonstrating a great deal of creative power, very active and strong in his desires proper only to real personalities. Nicolae Diaconu persistently follows, with all his heart, to define his personality thoroughly his studies he has completed “Folk Art School”-Brasov-traditional and decorative ceramics section.
Using his extraordinary native talent about ceramic art creation, extremely ingenious and also persevering, Nicolae Diaconu looked for and found his own artistic style, unique in our country, working in an original technical manner. He reached perfection after hard work and researching, including a burning technique (he proposed and constructed a burning furnace extremely efficient-also in the “ASTRA” Museum, Sibiu) being now an acknowledged ceramics artist.
For his unusual talent, his highest product quality, for having a consistent theme representing the highest level in Romania`s village folk tradition civilization and culture. He has had the merit of reactivating the folk art type, which was almost lost-ceramics art frequently practiced by our villages “craftsmen”, being influenced by figurative of Neolithic forms. He is member of the folk Traditional Art Academy-Romania. His one-man show presented in Bucharest and Sibiu, was specially awarded in 1985 at the Naïve Art Inter-county Exhibition- Botosani and also in 1988 at “Art Exhibition” Bucharest, and his great success at the fair-exhibitions in : Germany, France, Italy, Hungary, U.S.A. Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington D.C. (in1999) He received the prize of “The National Foundation for Rural civilization” “Niste Tarani”(“Some peasants”, in year 2003) He received many other national and international prizes.
